Or, rather, a kid nearly got himself killed yesterday.
Some stuff, mainly directed at YouTube commenters, but also useful here:
- The camera is mounted higher, further forward, and further right than my eyes. I was watching the minivan’s windows, and the kid was too short to appear in my field of vision, even though he’s very clear to the camera.
- These kids were running around my car and the minivan (which isn’t even the one they came from) before I started the engine, so I chose to pull out forward in order to have better visibility. Backing out is more proper, sure, but a lot more risky in this situation.
Moral of the story: Keep an eye on your children and make sure that they know how dangerous a parking lot can be.

Or just don’t let your kids run around in parking lots.

Oh yeah, I’m terrified of pulling out of parking spots. Especially backing the S2000 with the top up, as rearward visibility is terrible, but even without that.
And as a multiple father I can confirm that most children have zero judgment and require a parent to impose theirs.

And yet some people insist that they are literally the best drivers and their 100% glass car doesn’t need no backup camera.

God forbid I ever catch a person being run down on my dashcam. I’ve been wanting to use that clip ever since it aired.

i annoy most of my friends by puttering around parking lots and neighborhoods at very slow speeds. had a close call ONCE in a neighborhood. had to get out and check for a body after a kid poked out from in between some parked cars. all it takes

Wrong view point. For the rest of your life kids will be jumping in front of your car. Yes they are wrong to do that and yes the parents are irresponsible. But if you hit them you would have to live with the damage done. You therefore need to avoid them at all times and not depend on them to stay out of your path.
No that’s not right and not fair, but it is reality. Face up to the unfair reality and look for them everywhere as you drive.

That’s what is thinking. I have a fit hold on them when we get out. They are 3 and know not to do that

This happened yesterday in CLE.. Lady turned right and didn’t realize someone was crossing the street she was turning on. Slammed right into them. She pulled over in a nearby gas station, got out and looked at the incident SHE CAUSED from afar and then hopped in her car and drove off.. Unbelievable....

I do agree, but I think you’re kind of missing the point I’m making. Yes, obviously, I need to be careful, as do other drivers, around kids. However, that doesn’t mean it’s strictly our responsibility to avoid having a child throw himself under our wheels. The most important part of the equation is the kid himself, and the easiest way to prevent an accident like this is to have the kid know the dangers of running out from behind a car or other obstacle.

While backing may be more dangerous, that is what pedestrians are watching for. When you are backing, the backup lights let the people around you know you are coming. When you pull through the stall, there are no visual indicators other than movement. Yeah, yeah, you may have daytime running lights, but in many cars, those come on as soon as the car is started. It’s fairly common to see a car sitting in a stall with the lights on and the engine running while the driver is sifting through a purse or looking at their phone.

Unless it’s one of those fucking GM cars that uses the backup lights as courtesy lights when you hit the door lock/unlock on the fob or park the car or whatever GM thought was a good idea at the time.

Good point. I’ve been fooled by those more than once. Still, it doesn’t change why it is safer for pedestrians if you back out instead of pull through.
